I think they've eaten the peacocks. Deb and I were speculating about what happens when there are too many red boars, etc. They probably breed like crazy and have to be culled-out occasionally. Probably fed to the lions or something. I remember when I was young, that the Zoo was full of these prarie chickens and the hens would have broods of chicks running after them in the spring. I think they were more interesting to the kids because they were right there in front of you, no moats or bars or screens. The Zoo 'cleaned them up' somehow and they're gone, too. Too bad.

Bill - My husband and I also love the zoo and WAP (I'm with you ... it will always be the WAP). We never plan ahead, just all of a sudden decide we're going to one of the parks. Over the years, we've had Zoo passes off and on - when things are really hectic, we don't end up going as much. But when it's just a normal easy weekend, we might go to the WAP just to walk. Beautiful landscaping and it's just a great place to walk and enjoy our lovely So-Cal weather. The WAP is closer to us so we go there more, but I still love every trip to the Zoo. I like the big aviary and the polar bear area and I used to love a great walk down the canyon near the front entrance. I used to see a lot more Peacocks than I do now, but I have seen them occassionally. It's certainly worth every penny!
