Ignorance and the egg scare
I commented recently on an article in the Christian Science Monitor regarding the recent idiocy about salmonella in eggs. A reader commented that they had rinsed their eggs and put them in the refrigerator and now what else should be done? My comment was: What else should you do with eggs? COOK THEM! The Centers for Disease Control say that thorough cooking destroys the bacteria. There are some who eat eggs raw. They should be careful, then. Factually, you (and everyone else) could have purchased eggs at one time or another (and long before this scare) that contained salmonella and you just cooked them and ate them! Imagine! Human beings everywhere, everyday, buy, wash and cook food that might have a bacteria or other problem and they don’t die! How long do you think eggs stay on the shelf in the supermarkey? A day or two at the most, I would think. These eggs in question have long ago cycled into and out of our diets and no one has, apparently, reported any ill effects. It’s a non-issue as more and more time passes.
Another detail that will be gory to some, any eggs returned will probably be processed into other products and consumed by you in other forms. How could this be? Because it is safe to do so. It happens everyday, too. But without the fanfare. Milk is pasteurized to kill bacteria, everyday. Get used to it.
This is another non-issue whipped-up by the news media so they can have something sensational to print. Of course, they know that the ignoramuses out there will listen and create a great hue and cry and be waiting on pins and needles for the next update. The rest of us just go about with our lives, not aware of how frightened we should be. I haven’t heard or read of anyone dying, or even getting sick from any of this . Get a brain, people! And, have an egg.
